Fager, S. (2018, February). Multimodal input to enhance access to technology. Presentation at the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) Annual Conference, Orlando, Fl.
Important advances in AAC technology access have occurred over the past decades (eye tracking, head tracking, new switch technologies). However, all of these methods rely on a single physical access modality. While new access options have increased the potential to control technology, several challenges exist to this single modal access approach. For individuals with motor control issues, over-reliance on a single physical access modality to support all communication often requires optimal positioning, can be fatiguing, and can cause over-use injuries over time. Opportunities exist to create technologies that integrate multimodal access strategies (e.g., integrating both eye movements and gestures to optimize access) to alleviate some of the challenges faced by single modal access methods. This presentation focuses on describing the research and development of several multimodal access methods designed to increase independence and efficiency of access.
