Abstract: The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (RERC on AAC) is a 5-year collaborative center, funded by NIDILRR. Since 2014, the RERC on AAC (https://rerc-aac.psu.edu) has addressed research, development, training and dissemination projects in AAC. We will provide a summary of the RERC on AAC State of the Science Conference held in July, 2018, at which leading AAC researchers, manufacturers, federal government personnel, people who use AAC, and family members discussed current research and future development needs in AAC. RERC on AAC partners also will present their progress on seven research and development projects: use of brain-computer interface; AAC technologies to support the transition from graphic symbols to literacy; visual cognitive processing demands of AAC interfaces; multimodal technologies to improve access; technology to support interactive video visual scene displays; a Smart Predictor app for AAC conversation; and a cognitive demands checklist for AAC technologies and apps.
All RERC on AAC projects presented at ATIA 2019 can be found here.
