Light, J., Beukelman, D., Fager, S., Fried-Oken, M., Jakobs, T., & McNaughton (February, 2018). RERC on AAC: Progress on research, development and training activities. Presentation at the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) Annual Conference, Orlando, Fl.
The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (RERC on AAC) is a 5-year collaborative center, funded by NIDILRR. Since 2014, the RERC on AAC (https://rerc-aac.psu.edu) has addressed research, development, training and dissemination projects related to rehabilitation strategies and interventions for individuals with complex communication needs. At this session, RERC on AAC partners will present their progress on seven research and development projects: use of brain-computer interface; AAC technologies to support the transition from graphic symbols to literacy; visual cognitive processing demands of AAC interfaces; multimodal technologies to improve access; technology to support interactive video visual scene displays; a Smart Predictor app for AAC conversation; and a cognitive demands checklist for AAC technologies and apps. We will also present on our training and dissemination activities, including the Doctoral Student Research Think Tank, Rehabilitation Engineering capstone projects, and free instructional resources on AAC.
