T3: Student Research and Design Challenges

RESNA SDCPurpose: To encourage student R&D in AAC through an AAC Student Research and Design Competition, and to support the RESNA Student Design Challenge at a free website.

Activities: We will sponsor an annual Student Research and Design Competition on thematic topics related to AAC (e.g., innovative access techniques, wearable AAC technology). In addition, the RERC on AAC will continue to support the availability of a website (https://sites.psu.edu/resnasdc/) at which over 350 student submissions to the RESNA Student Design Challenge are now publicly available.

Patrick Regan and a quote from his article in the AAC journal

The first word in accessibility is “access” (Regan, 2025)

Patrick Regan (2025) is President-Elect of USSAAC, and he also plays leadership roles in ISAAC, and in outreach programs for the Bridge School. Patrick experiences Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and has used a wide variety of AAC to communicate. In this paper, he describes “access challenges that I have experienced as someone who uses AAC, how my team and I have resolved them, and what challenges I face now.”
