Poster presented at the State of the Science Conference of the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (RERC on AAC), Arlington, Va.
Caron et al. (2018) Poster
- Children with ASD are often highly interested in electronic screen media, including videos.
- Incorporating these interests into intervention can be a challenge for children with ASD and complex communication needs, since AAC systems are often separate from the device that plays the videos.
- A potential solution is to use visual scene displays (VSDs) embedded within videos (i.e., “video VSDs”) (Light et al., 2014). Video VSDs allow the individual to quickly access relevant vocabulary in the exact moment it is needed to discuss events as they are depicted within the video.
- This study investigated the effects of using a video VSD on the social communication of individuals with ASD and limited speech during a shared preferred leisure activity.
